DIY Whipped Tallow Balm — The Only Balm Recipe You’ll Ever Need 🐮🍯

And this is why we do what we do.

At BOTALLOW, we’re passionate about reconnecting skincare with nature, and there’s nothing more grounding, nourishing, or effective than creating your own tallow balm from scratch. Whether you’re a skincare formulator, DIY enthusiast, or simply curious about ancestral ingredients, this is the recipe we keep coming back to again and again.

Made with our Refined Cosmetic-Grade Grass-Fed NZ Tallow, this whipped balm captures the simplicity and richness of traditional skincare, elevated through gentle, modern refinement.

Why Tallow Balm?

Tallow is one of the most skin-compatible natural moisturisers on earth. Containing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E & K) and essential fatty acids, it deeply nourishes, hydrates, and supports the skin barrier without synthetic additives or unnecessary fillers.

When whipped with a touch of liquid oil, tallow transforms into a light, cloud-like balm that melts effortlessly into the skin. Perfect for dry, sensitive, or mature skin, and gentle enough for baby care.

Whipped Tallow Balm Recipe

Ingredients (by weight):

  • 74% BOTALLOW Cosmetic-Grade Tallow

  • 24% Jojoba oil (or your preferred combination of liquid oils)

  • 1% Vitamin E

  • 1% Essential oil blend (optional)

Method

  1. Melt – Gently warm the tallow until fully melted (around 40–45 °C).

  2. Blend – Add your jojoba oil and Vitamin E. Stir gently, and add essential oils if using.

  3. Cool – Allow the mixture to rest until it begins to firm up (around 20–25 °C) but remains soft.

  4. Whip – Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip until light and fluffy.

  5. Jar – Pipe or spoon into jars while still soft for a smooth, clean finish.

Tips for Success

This low-heat melt-and-whip method preserves the integrity of your tallow and oils, maintaining nutrients while achieving a luxurious, whipped texture.

If you prefer a firmer, salve-style balm, try a heat-and-pour method instead. Simply skip the whipping stage and pour into jars while liquid.

Your Turn!

Every batch of tallow balm tells its own story, from the farm to your formulation bench. We’d love to see what you create using our BOTALLOW Cosmetic-Grade Tallow.
