BOTALLOW Joins Cosmetics New Zealand: A Milestone for Tallow and a New Chapter for the Beauty Industry

We’re proud to share an important moment in BOTALLOW’s journey:
we have been officially accepted as a member of Cosmetics New Zealand — the first tallow company to achieve this.

For us, this isn’t just a membership.
It’s a signal that the cosmetics industry in Aotearoa is ready to recognise tallow for what it truly is: a high-value, bio-compatible, sustainably sourced lipid with enormous potential for modern formulation.

And it marks the beginning of something bigger — for BOTALLOW, for formulators, and for the future of natural beauty.

Why This Membership Matters

Cosmetics New Zealand is the country’s leading industry body representing cosmetic brands, formulators, ingredient suppliers, manufacturers, and innovators.
To join as a tallow supplier — a category never previously recognised — is significant for two reasons:

1. It validates tallow as a legitimate, forward-looking cosmetic ingredient

For decades, tallow has been overlooked in mainstream cosmetics despite its natural alignment with skin biology.
By recognising BOTALLOW, Cosmetics New Zealand signals that tallow now has a place in the modern beauty ecosystem — not as a niche material, but as a credible, premium ingredient category.

2. It sets a clear benchmark for “cosmetic-grade tallow” in New Zealand

Until now, there have been no defined standards for cosmetic-grade tallow.
Through our membership, we will continue to work with Cosmetics NZ to help shape expectations around purity, safety, sustainability, and quality — ensuring formulators can trust and rely on tallow as a consistent and high-performance input.

BOTALLOW’s multi-phase gentle wet-rendering method, coupled with strict traceability and quality control, is a central part of this.
Our goal is to move tallow out of the commodity space and elevate it to the level of any premium natural oil used in skincare.

What This Means for the Cosmetics Industry

The cosmetics industry is hungry for ingredients that are:

  • sustainably sourced

  • upcycled or circular in nature

  • performance driven

  • ethically produced

  • traceable and transparent

Tallow — when rendered correctly — ticks every box.

A circular, nose-to-tail ingredient for future-focused beauty

Cosmetic-grade tallow supports a truly circular model by transforming suet, a nutrient-rich but underutilised by-product, into a highly functional skincare ingredient.
This approach reduces waste, honours the whole animal, and aligns with global sustainability expectations.

High compatibility with the skin barrier

Unlike many plant oils that rely on phytosterols, tallow naturally contains fatty acids and lipids similar to those found in human sebum.
This is one of the reasons formulators increasingly recognise tallow as a powerful tool for:

  • barrier support

  • moisture retention

  • skin repair formulations

  • minimalist, bio-aligned beauty

Our membership amplifies this message across the industry, helping more formulators understand tallow’s potential beyond traditional uses.

A Milestone for BOTALLOW and for Aotearoa

Becoming the first tallow business to join Cosmetics New Zealand is a moment of pride for us, and we’re deeply grateful to Melissa and Angela from the Cosmetics NZ team for their support and guidance as we navigated the pathway to membership.

This milestone reinforces our commitment to:

  • setting the national standard for cosmetic-grade tallow

  • supporting R&D and formulation science in New Zealand

  • offering a premium, traceable, grass-fed NZ ingredient

  • contributing to the future of sustainable beauty

  • paving the way for international recognition of Aotearoa’s natural cosmetic ingredients

From here, our focus is on continuing to raise the bar — for ourselves, for the tallow category, and for the brands and chemists who choose to work with us.

Looking Ahead

As we deepen our involvement with Cosmetics New Zealand, we see exciting opportunities ahead:

  • clearer definitions and frameworks for cosmetic-grade tallow

  • greater collaboration with formulators, chemists, and R&D teams

  • stronger sustainability narratives for NZ-made beauty

  • international pathways for tallow-based cosmetic innovation

We’re proud of this achievement — not only for BOTALLOW but for what it represents for the entire cosmetics sector.
This is a new chapter for tallow, and we’re honoured to help lead the way.

Tallow has a future in modern beauty. And that future starts here.
